BRUINCARD
Get your BruinCard
early (see Things to Do
handout). Always have it with you anytime you are on
campus. It gives you access many different things on campus
and in the department:
•
Wooden
Recreation Center
• The Ashe
Center
• The Copy Room
• Chemistry Storeroom
• Cheaper fare on the Big Blue Bus and the Culver City
Bus
• Chemistry Library
STOREROOM
The Chemistry & Biochemistry Research Equipment and Chemical Storerooms is located in Young Hall, Room 1224. Here you can buy
glassware, gloves, electrical supplies, ice, dry ice,
cleaning products, stationary and office supplies. For
chemicals, you’ll need to complete an
online order form and your orders will be delivered to
you promptly. Chemicals and glassware are about 30% more
expensive than from catalogs such as Fisher, so you
should buy them for last minute use.
HEALTHCARE
For healthcare, go to the Arthur Ashe
Center. Missed
appointments are charged a $20 fee, so be sure to keep all
your appointments. All Arthur Ashe bills are charged to
your BAR account (www.ursa.ucla.edu),
so logon regularly to check your balance. The deadline for
payments is the 20th of every month. A fee is charged to your
account for every month a balance is carried over from the
20th.
Your health insurance card, dental and eye care information
will be sent by regular mail.
CLASSES
Register for classes during orientation week. Do this after
you have spoken with your advisor about which classes to
take. To enroll, logon to URSA.
You will need your UID number and PIN.
JOINING A GROUP
Some of you have
already joined a group. If you haven’t, research the
different professors and talk to their graduate students.
This should be done early and you must decide on a lab by
the spring quarter.
Biochemistry students do three rotations (one each quarter)
for their first year. You will be asked for your top three
choices for your fall rotation. You will meet with Dr.
Clubb to discuss your fall rotation. After this meeting
register under the PI’s name with his/her 596 class
and 256 class.
CAMPUS PHONE NUMBERS
The phone
numbers on the UCLA campus use an extension system. If you
are calling from a campus phone to another campus phone,
you need only to dial the last 5 numbers. If you are
calling from a non-campus phone to a campus phone, note
that there are three different prefixes:
• 794 (for
extensions that start with 4)
• 825 (for extensions that start with 5)
• 206 (for extensions that start with 6)
The area code for UCLA and its surrounding area 310. To
access an outside line while on a campus phone, first dial
8.
KEYS
You will get 3 keys as a Chemistry and Biochemistry
graduate student:
• X26 opens
exterior doors
• X6011 opens interior doors
• D340 opens interior does that X6011 does not
COMPUTING INFORMATION
The
Bioinformatics lab (Young Hall 4067 and 3076) is available
to all graduate students in the department. It is directly
across from the green elevators. You can come here
throughout your stay at UCLA, but many people use the
computers in their offices or labs once they’ve
joined a group.
A chemistry e-mail will be assigned to you. Its address
will be username@chem.ucla.edu.
Change the password when you log on. If you would like a
UCLA e-mail address (username@ucla.edu)
sign up for one through Bruin On-Line. You can sign up
online at Bruin Online
OR in person at the Math
Sciences Addition 4302. You will need your UID and your
date of birth. The server name for our department is
silicon.chem.ucla.edu if you wish to access it via ssh or
sftp.
www.my.ucla.edu
allows you to check
your username@ucla.edu
e-mail address, look at
classes in which you are enrolled, make a class schedule,
and e-mail the class that you are TA-ing.
If you will be using a dial-up service to access the
internet from home, you can do so through
Bruin
Online or you can
do so through the department. The number for the department
dial-up service is 310-825-5666.
To access restricted UCLA resources, such as journal
articles, from off-campus, visit The Bruin Online Proxy
Server information page (http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/proxy/)
for instructions.

BUS SERVICES
The Big Blue
Bus is the Santa
Monica Bus system.
The Green
Bus is the bus
system for Culver City.
There is a Campus Shuttle Bus service that takes you around
the UCLA campus. It takes you to Weyburn, around Parking
Lot 32, and the Chemistry Department
During the school year, you may swipe your BruinCard on any
blue or green bus and pay only 25 cents each way. But
during the summer, you are required to pay the full fare of
75 cents each way. The Central Ticket Office (located in
the James West Alumni Center) offers metrocards that can be
used during the summer for 70 cents a ride.
The MTA is the bus system for Los Angeles. This website is
nice because it has a trip planner that includes all the
bus systems, not just MTA. The Central Tickets Office also
sells tokens for this bus system.
CENTRAL
TICKET OFFICE (CTO)
Besides
selling bus metrocards and tokens, you may buy movie
tickets, UCLA sports tickets, and a variety of amusement
park passes here at well.
