Week 7 Problem Set 30BL

  • GCMS Analysis of Eugenol from Cloves

    This Week's Experiment: Eugenol

    1. An organic compound, X, steam distills at 90.5°C. Assume the distillation occurs at atmospheric pressure.
    Answer the
    following questions.

    2. Acetyleugenol and caryophyllene are common contaminants found in Eugenol which was isolated from cloves. Answer the following:

    a. What are the structures of caryophyllene and acetyleugenol?

    b. Outline the a simple procedure which could be used to isolate those three compounds.

    3. What are the structures of limonene, menthol and camphor? What are they used for commercially?

    4. How many 13C[1H} signals do you expect for the following compounds? In which of the following ranges (0-50, 50-100, 100-160 or 160-220 ppm) are they observed?
