Cu rrent research includes stereochemistry and NMR spectroscopy.
Isotope effects on chemical shifts, particularly those of a conformational
(equilibrium) origin are under investigation. For example, we have shown that
compound I sho
ws observably diastereotopic protons in the
monodeuteriated methyl group. In collaboration with Professor H. G. Floss
(University of Washington) and his research group, this work has led to an NMR
method for directly determining the configuration
of a CHDT group by means of
tritium NMR. The method is based on the
fact that the tritium NMR
chemical shifts in II and III are observably
different.
In collaboration with Professor J. E. Baldwin (Syracuse Univer sity) and his research group, we have shown that predictable conformational isotope effects allow the quantitative analysis of mixtures of stereochemically different trideuteriated cyclopentenes produced by the vinyl cyclopropane-cyclopentene rearrange ment.
Novel relaxation effects in NMR spectroscopy have been discovered and studied. In collaboration with Professor Martin Saunders (Yale University) and his research group, we have shown that [3]He NMR of endoh edrally trapped helium in fullerenes can be observed and provides new and important evidence about the magnetic properties of the fullerenes.
The conformations of cyclic molecules are being studied experimentally by NMR and theoreticall y by molecular mechanics and ab initio quantum mechanical methods.
