SMACS is the UCLA student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world’s largest scientific society. Students of all majors who have an interest in chemistry-related education, outreach, research, or careers are welcome.

      On Tuesday, May 5th, SMACS will be hosting Paul Nelson from Southern California Edison at 6PM in WG Young 2033. He will be speaking about power plants (gas, nuclear, hydroelectric, solar) and the technology being used for renewable energy. Hope to see you there!
      The first annual Chemistry Bowl at UCLA on Saturday, April 4. If you are interested in participating on our team, please fill out this form. All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you there!
      Another exciting upcoming event is our first ever collaboration with the Cooking and Baking Club on Sunday, April 5 at Sunset Rec. At the Science of Food event, attendees will learn to make dishes such as lasagna, fresh mozzarella, and liquid nitrogen ice cream! There is a fee of $5 and for more information about past cooking events, visit the Cooking and Baking Club Facebook page.
      SMACS is excited to announce the first annual Chemistry Bowl at UCLA on April 4, 2015. All students are welcome and participating organizations include SMACS, AIChE, and BiochemASE. Come out for a day of friendly competition and meet some of our wonderful members!

The event will be on Friday, January 30 from 12:30PM to 2PM and involve short lectures and demonstrations about materials such as thermoelectrics. Volunteers will assist in these demos and will receive free T-shirts!

      Professor Garg is an organic chemistry professor who researches natural product synthesis and reaction discovery. Join us as Professor Garg discusses the path that led him from his undergraduate studies at NYU to becoming a professor at UCLA. He will also speak about the different routes taken by some of his friends from college who also studied chemistry. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 21 at 6PM in YH 2033.

His event is titled "An Inside Look into a Sports Drug Testing Laboratory" at Billingsley's on 11326 W Pico Blvd. Check-in begins at 6PM, dinner at 7PM, and the presentation at 8PM. The cost of attendence is $32.

      To celebrate the 2014 International Year of Crystallography, SMACS is excited to welcome Dr. Saeed Khan on Wednesday, November 19 at 6PM in YH 2033. He will be giving a talk titled "Molecular Structures from X-ray Diffraction: 100 years of X-ray Crystallography."
      In addition to the short talk, there will also be a quick demo in the crystallography lab. Please remember to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes (lab coats are not necessary).
      Just a reminder, SMACS will be participating in Exploring Your Universe this weekend! Come out and join us for a day of fun and science.

EYU 2014
      SMACS is excited to be participating in the annual Exploring Your Universe event here at UCLA, but we need your help! We are recruiting volunteers for the event on Sunday, November 16th. More information about the event can be found here.
      SMACS is looking for volunteers to man our booth and conduct demos for EYU attendees.This year EYU is providing all volunteers with lunch and a free shirt; however, all SMACS volunteers need to complete a short online registration before October 31st.

      This week we are fortunate enough to have two guest speakers. Alice Phung from the Science & Food Blog will be here on Thursday, October 22 from 6-8PM in Young Hall 2033 to talk to us about the "Science of Chocolate."
      On Friday, October 24, Professor Wenyuan Shi from the Department of Oral Biology and MIMG will be speaking from 6-8PM in Young Hall 2033 about his research on "Sugar and Oral Health."

General Meeting 2: SMACS and Professionals
Tuesday, April 22nd at 6:30PM in YH2033SMACS is collaborating with Teach for America to bring you a panel of professionals (professors, doctors, pharmacists, professionals in industry) to come talk about their story and their thoughts on STEM Education. Come with your questions and an open mind as you are in the process of deciding what to do with your science degree!
SMACS at the 2014 Earth Day Fair
Want to learn more about the chemistry of your personal care products (e.g. cosmetics, shampoo, deodorant, etc) while also teaching others about less toxic alternatives and making an all-natural, vegan moisturizer? Get involved with the Earth Day Fair on Wed, April 23rd!! Volunteers are needed to represent SMACS at the fair between 10 am-2 pm (shifts based on your availability), as well as for set-up and clean up. We also need helpers to make the poster board and the homemade moisturizer. UCLA Cogeneration Plant Tour
This quarter, we will be attending a tour of UCLA's very own natural gas power plant. It's called a "Co-gen plant" because it combines heat and power production, making it twice as efficient as a normal power plant. The tour will be hosted by Ms. Nurit Katz, UCLA's chief sustainability officer. This is definitely an opportunity you don't want to miss!! Our final general meeting of the quarter will be held this coming Wednesday March 5th at 6:40pm in Young Hall 2033.
This meeting will serve as a combined training sessio for those who will be competing in the upcoming ACS Student Chapter Chemistry Bowl. Professor Mir Mousavi, an expert in electrochemistry, will be teaching us the theory behind building, and how to build a voltaic cell. As usual, food and drink will be provided.

Happy Lunar New Year! As we head into the second half of the quarter SMACS is gearing up with more events and activities!
General Meeting 2
Join us for a presentation by Dr. Merchant of the UCLA Department of Chemistry on his exciting research in "Genomic Approaches to Studying Photosynthesis".
Chemistry Bowl
This year SMACS will be competeting with other local ACS student chapters in Southern California in a chemistry showdown. The competition will include spectroscopy, lab bench challenges (ie: titration and battery building), chemistry-themed relay obstacle course, and chemistry jeopardy (for three finalist teams). Content will be limited to general and organic chemistry.
SMACS is looking to build a team of five talented students to participate in this competetition. Students of all levels are invited to apply.
