Mutagen: A substance or process which causes mutations in genetic material (usually DNA). Racemic thalidomide was once marketed as a sedative and antiemetic for pregnant women. The R enantiomer has the desired sedative and antiemetic effects, where as the S enantiomer is a mutagen and teratogen.
