Hard water:
Water
containing high levels of dissolved metal cations
("minerals") whose formal
charge is more than 1+, particularly Ca2+
and Mg2+. Soft water
contains low levels of Ca2+, Mg2+, etc.
Hard water,
containing high levels of dissolved Ca2+, lead to
this pipe becoming blocked with CaSO4 crystals.
