Gluconeogenesis: The biochemical process in which glucose is biosynthesized from noncarbohydrate precursors such as lactate and pyruvate.

In order to regulate glucose levels in the bloodstream, lactate is converted in pyruvate in the liver. Pyruvate is then converted into glucose. The pyruvate to glucose conversion is the metabolic reverse of glycolysis.
