Cholic acid: A steroidal carboxylic acid which emulsifies fats by acting as a surfactant in the intestine. This slows the passage of  fats through the gut thereby increasing fat absorption into the bloodstream. Along with cholesterol, cholic acid also regulates bile synthesis.
