Chain reaction: A reaction whose mechanism includes one or more steps that are repeated indefinitely, until the chain is terminated, or reactants are used up. While many reactions can be called chain reactions, the term is usually reserved for free radical reactions or for nuclear fission reactions used in nuclear reactors and nuclear fission weapons.
