Acid catalyzed: A process that is catalyzed by an acid.


In the absence of a strong acid catalyst, benzoic acid and methanol do not react.


In the presence of a strong acid catalyst such as sulfuric acid, benzoic acid and methanol react to form methyl benzoate. This is the Fischer esterification reaction.
