Problems Set (Meeting 11, October 30/31, 2003)
General
Make sure that you turn in a hardcopy of your research paper by Friday October 31, 2003 at 5 pm at YH1217 and the electronic version to turnitin.com as well (see back of reader for details). Late reports will be deducted points (10% per day including the weekend). If you don't submit the report online by Monday November 3, 2003 at 5 pm, you will receive a "zero" score for the paper. In addition, it will be reported to the Dean of Students. Any plagiarism, partial or full resubmission of a papers or/and other forms of cheating will result in a report to the Dean of Students as well. Make sure that you cite your sources and try to use your own words as much as possible. Here is a checklist what should be included into the report.
There will be a quiz on Thursday and Friday of this week. Please make sure to wrap up the lidocaine project. The postlab report for this project will be due in lab on November 6/7, 2003. The NMR spectra of lidocaine are on my website.
Experiment
Referring to step 3 of the lidocaine project (conversion of (4) to (5))
1. Why do you use an excess of diethylamine in this reaction?
2. How do you know if your reaction started? Show pertinent chemical equations.
3. Why is diethyl ether not a good solvent for this reaction?
4. Outline a separation scheme for the isolation of lidocaine. Indicate at each step in which layer your product is.
5. How do you remove the water from the crude lidocaine in this reaction?
6. How can you prove that the C-N bond of an amide function possesses a considerable double bond character?
