Problems Set (Meeting 10)
General Announcements
1. The next quiz will be administered on Thursday May 6, 2004 at 8 am.
2. We will meet in CS50, and then move to the computer lab for an introduction into Chem Draw after the quiz.
3. Make sure that you turn in a hardcopy of your research paper by Friday May 14, 2004 at 5 pm at YH1217 and the electronic version to turnitin.com as well (CourseID: 1132410, Passwd: Chem30CL). Late reports will be deducted points (10% per day including the weekend). If you don't submit the report online by Monday May 17, 2004 at 5 pm, you will receive a "zero" score for the paper. In addition, it will be reported to the Dean of Students. Any plagiarism, partial or full resubmission of a papers or/and other forms of cheating will result in a report to the Dean of Students as well. Make sure that you cite your sources and try to use your own words as much as possible. Here is a checklist what should be included into the report.

1. Referring to the conversion of 2,6-dimethylaniline to a-Chloro-2,6-dimethylacetanilide, answer the following questions.
a. Why is sodium acetate used in the reaction?
b. Why is only the amide formed an not the SN2-substitution product?
c. Why is the acid chloride used in this reaction and not the acid?
2. Referring to the conversion of a-Chloro-2,6-dimethylacetanilide to licocaine, answer teh following questions.
a. Why do you use an excess of diethylamine in this reaction?
b. How do you know if your reaction started? Show pertinent chemical equations.
c. Why is diethyl ether not a good solvent for this reaction?
