1. General

Review: Chromatography, 13C-NMR spectroscopy, HETCOR, DEPT spectroscopy, TLC technique

Make sure that you are enrolled in the course by now.

2. Experiment

Safety note: Sodium ethoxide solution is very corrosive. Wear gloves when you transfer it. Please cap the storage bottle right after you took out what you need. Why?

Do not look directly into the UV lamp!

Use absolute ethanol in the intial stage of the reaction. The reaction will not work with 95% ethanol!!! Make sure that you cap the flask. Why?

The filtrations should be done with a Hirsh funnel due to the small amount of materials that you are handling.

3. Things to think about

a. How can you synthesize the starting Wittig salt?

b. Why do you need use sodium ethoxide solution to form the Ylide?

c. What would happen in the TLC part if you would use ethanol as eluting solvent?
