Summary of the Instructional Enhancement Initiative

The UCLA College of Letters and Science launched a multi-year initiative in the summer of 1997 to enhance undergraduate courses through increased access to computers and integration of new instructional technologies such as the World Wide Web.

Financed through a per-course student fee for course materials:

Life and Physical Sciences Courses $3.50 per unit

Humanities and Social Sciences $2.50 per unit

Goals achieved in first year:

Web page for every course

Expanded and upgraded student computer labs

Extended hours in student computer labs

New servers and software

Numerous instructional technology support staff
