Welcome and Announcements
The Instructional Computing Committee
Web site is at: http://www.chem.ucla.edu/dept/ICC/main.html.
The Summary of the Student IEI Surveys
for 1997-1998 is posted.
The Winter and Spring Quarter 1998
Faculty IEI Surveys are posted.
The Faculty Technology Initiative is
also posted.
The special distance education allocation
from the state to UC, related to the California Virtual University, did
not come through this summer.
IEI Web Site
The major student concern since implementation of the IEI is dissatisfaction
with paying fees. Coupled with that are misunderstandings about what is
supported and the mistaken opinion that the funds only pay for class Web
sites. The committee decided that it would be useful to have an informative
IEI Web site for students. Further, this could be a place where reports
required by the Student Fee Advisory Committee could be posted.
ACTION: Lianna Anderson agreed to have the IEI Workgroup (and Eric
Splaver) create an IEI Web site.
Student Printing Costs
One issue that became apparent from the student survey on IEI was dissatisfaction
with printing costs. In some classes, what was formerly handed out in class,
was now posted on the course Web site and students are being charged 15
cents per page for printing at the CLICC, Social Sciences, and Humanities
computer labs. In contrast, the Life Sciences and Science Learning Center
labs are only charging 3 cents per page. The committee agreed that it was
improper to charge students excessive amounts for printing.
ACTION: The Assistant Deans agreed to work with the computing labs
and possibly CLICC to reduce the printing costs.
Winter Quarter Student IEI Survey
The ICC student surveys on IEI were successful in gathering a snapshot
of attitudes and usage in the first year of the initiative. We would like
to do one survey this year, so we need to consider changes from the previous
surveys. One point is that information should be gathered that is relevant
for the evaluation of the IEI fee at the end of the first three years.
The committee considered different survey formats and administration (paper
form in selected courses, new questions on faculty teaching evaluation
forms, voluntary response through IEI Web site or MyUCLA, email to students,
etc), but no consensus emerged. Some members felt more direct student input
and more representative student sampling were needed. Some advocated direct
questions such as "How many of your classes have useful Web sites?"
ACTION: Committee members should send in their suggestions for changes
or new questions for the student survey and how to administer the survey.
Lianna Anderson will ask the Student Fee Advisory Committee (SFAC) what
information they would find useful.
Issues for the AITB
In many of the ICC meetings, issues have arisen that are essentially
campus wide in scope rather than specific to the College of Letters and
Science. Therefore, it was decided that the ICC should be proactive about
communicating with the UCLA Academic Information Technology Board (AITB).
Further, there was discussion about the Berkeley Campus Computing Commission
Recommendations which can be found at http://www.chance.berkeley.edu/evcp/COCC.Report.html.
It was agreed that a list of priority issues and recommendations should
be sent to AITB. This may focus on instructional computing issues we have
discussed, but are campus wide in scope.
ACTION: Committee members should send to the ICC listserve their
recommendations of key issues that need to be addressed.
Student Computer Literacy
Should there be computer and information literacy definitions and standards
for UCLA undergraduate students? Can faculty use IEI supported Web pages
for classes and expect that all students know how to access and use the
electronic information? Many computer labs on campus offer student training,
but is there a common minimum level of computer competency? There was disagreement
on the defining issues and where to proceed, but there seemed to be agreement
that further discussion was warranted.
ACTION: Committee members should send their opinions to the ICC
listserve or be prepared to discuss them at the next ICC meeting.
Software Licensing
The committee discussed software licensing on campus. It was agreed
that there should be better communication between units that acquire software
licenses and from them to the faculty.
ACTION: Refer to AITB?
Student Email
For administrative and educational purposes, it would be highly desirable
for all students to have email addresses assigned to them upon admission.
(Many other schools already do this.) Further, lists of email addresses
should be sent electronically to faculty for each course. This has been
discussed in other campus computing committees, but the implementation
status is not known. The committee agreed that this was a priority item.
ACTION: Refer to AITB?
