My research has involved the extensive use of electron paramagnetic
resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to study: i) the rotational and translational
dynamics of paramagnetic molecules in liquids (isotropic and ordered)
and solids; and ii) the electronic and magnetic properties of defects
(intrinsic and transition metal ions) in bulk crystals and glasses,
thin solid films and optical fibers. Other areas of research include
fundamental studies of the photorefractive effect in ferroelectric crystals
and the optical spectroscopy of rare earth ions in insulators and semiconducting
materials.
I retired from the Hughes Research Laboratories (Malibu, CA) in 2000.
Prior to joining HRL (1981) I was a Professor of Physical Chemistry
at the University of Illinois, Chicago from 1968 until 1981. Since 2000
I have been a consultant for various companies including the Quantum
Group (San Diego), Macro-Energy Tech (El Segundo), and HRL (Malibu).
Currently I have an appointment with the Aerospace Corporation (El Segundo)
where I serve as a casual member of the technical staff.
